A valid assessment is one that is designed for its intended purpose, reflects contemporary perspectives on both learning and assessment, and is defensible to a range of audiences from the student to the community and beyond. This chapter identifies and clarifies assessment purpose, design and audience for contemporary educational contexts, including secondary school education and Vocational Education and Training contexts. It identifies emerging priorities in assesment and reporting, including global and national priorities, individual capacity building, and Informaton and Communications Technology (ICT) in assessment design.
