One in four Australian women have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Personal, systemic, and societal barriers prevent many women from leaving abusive relationships and some look to other outlets for safety and emotional support. Gambling venues can provide a safe, friendly environment that some victims of IPV find attractive. Playing electronic gaming machines also provides an emotional and physical escape but poses a significant risk of further harm and addiction and can result in more abuse. This chapter explores the context and complexities in which women victims of male partner violence use gambling venues as safe spaces.
