The Rockhampton trade union movement attained a certain notoriety among its counterparts throughout Australia in the mid-1950s. For some six months, unlike most other cities in the nation which possessed a trades and labour council, Rockhampton had not one functioning council but two: the 'old' Rockhampton Trades and Labour Council (RTLC) and the 'new' RTLC which seceded from the former body during a rowdy meeting at Trades Hall in 1956.
