This chapter introduces and contextualises the play 'The Orange Grove' written by George Landen Dann. This is a significant work by Dann showing his mastery of language and form and deep knowledge of the place he called, then being the Sunshine Coast, Qld. Originally written as a radio play, it was broadcast on ABC radio from 1958-63 and again in 1979. The work deals with great literary themes of love, betrayal and revenge while reflecting on the costs of progress. The central role of Carrie is also a signifiant tragic role for a female actor, and one that deserves greater recognition within the Australian dramatic repertoire.
