Local, national and transnational identities in textbooks and educational media : 10th international conference on research on textbooks and educational media, September 2009, Santiago de Compostela - Spain

This volume presents papers from the 10th IARTEM conference on textbooks and educational media, held in Santiago de Compo stela in September 2009. The theme for this conference was Local, National and Transnational Identities in Textbooks and Educational Media. There were 120 participants from five continents and more than thirty different countries. We especially wish to highlight the many Spanish, Portuguese and Galego speaking participants at this conference.The consequences of crossing cultures between local, national and transnational identities are of increasing interest, not least in terms of education. In a world of globalization and extended migration, a new understanding of 'identity' emerges. The increasing interest in local and national cultures must be met with an expansion of transnational understanding in education - education as reflected in textbooks and educational media.Since its very beginning in 1991, IARTEM has organized conferences with researchers and other interested parties from all over the world. There is a developing interest in this area of research within different disciplines and across disciplines. This volume starts with the keynote speakers and theoretical presentations. These are followed by papers from workshops in Spanish, portuguese and Galego. The final sections, covering the workshops in English, have been dedicated to four themes: (1) local, national and transnational identities in textbooks and educational media; (2) The approval and selection of textbooks and educational media; (3) The use of textbooks and educational media; and (4) Languages, texts and Images in textbooks and educational media.
